We have a a similar day like your Amnesty day but it is a week long event held twice a year and I am SO into looking for treasures in what other folks put on the curb. My husband and I tour the neighborhoods looking for goodies. We have found matching parts for our weed wacker, pots for the garden, a cool little outdoor chair that now sits on our front porch, lawn edging, and all sorts of goodies. I love free stuff like that.

Our compost bin is made of out pallets too. I will try and take a pic tomorrow and post (can't enter the contest)
I would like to see a picture of your compost bin and garden even though your not a part of the contest. I think it was from you that I got the idea of a pallet compost bin in the first place.
