After MUCH deliberation, we got a new puppy this week.

After a very bad night last night, he was diagnosed with parvo today.

I have one very heartbroken little girl on my hands.

B/C of finances, we are trying home treatments, and can definitely use some good puppy thoughts right now.

:hug2: I'm so sorry to hear that. The same thing happened to a friend of mine's new puppy recently. Hugs to your daughter, as well. I have an animal-lover DD, too, so I can only imagine how hard it is for her.

Thanks, ladies! The vet said his survival rate is 50%. We aren't going down w/o a fight. ;)

Our little Budee is still hanging in there! He's nowhere near out of the woods, though. From what I understand, if they do make it, it takes a long time to heal. If they don't make it, it can take a while to pass on. Jeez, what an emotional roller coaster!

We are taking him to the vet daily for anti-nausea shots, and we are giving him 3 fluid IV injections at home daily, along with an antibiotic to ward off future infections. This is a round-the-clock process - I'm totally not cut out for a career in nursing, lol.

I found an herbal liquid online that should be delivered today. The reviews online are about 50/50, but you guys know there are a lot of skeptics in the world where herbal remedies are concerned. At this point, we don't have much to lose, so I don't think it will hurt the pup to try.

I'll ask my hubby and my SIL, who's was a vet's assistant for a while. Hope things are well, it's hard to see your pet sick, and it's hard to lose one. We just lost Gus a couple weeks ago, but at least he wasn't sick. I'm all for most herbal remedies, totally go for it. He's already not doing well anyway. **Hugs to you and your daughter! I remember being a kid and animals dying and being sick. No fun, but part of life and death!

Awww... sorry to hear about your sick new puppy! :hug2: We had a puppy die of parvo back when I was a kid (the 70's) and it was very sad for us. Hopefully with modern and herbal medicine, and lots of TLC, your puppy will beat this. Hugs to you and your DD. :hug2:

My SIL said to try giving him Kaopectate (however you spell it) every 4 hours. How's he doing?

Thanks for checking!

We had a bad night last night, and hubs had to take the pup to the emergency vet @ 5am this morning. He's very dehydrated, and a hospital stay is what he needs. Unfortunately, we just don't have the $1200 - $1600 that would take (and that's the cost only for the first 24hrs). It breaks my heart - I wish we had the money, but we just don't.

So hubs decided to bring him back home, and we are on a 24hr, every 15min fluid schedule. My MIL is still here, so she's been a big help. She leaves tomorrow afternoon, and my hub leaves Saturday, so I'm not sure where that will leave us if the pup survives.

The vet seemed to indicate that this next 24hours is make it or break it. She's surprised that for such a small pup he has made it this far. She said usually they die within 5-7 days. Today is day 6.

Julee...so sorry you are dealing with this. If the puppy survives and there are more vet bills try applying for help with this organization. IMOM Home (http://www.imom.org) They are wonderful people and may be able to help you. Years ago they helped us with finances for our diabetic kitty(since passed). Due to low funds I believe they only do emergency help now but I am not sure. It is worth a try.

I hope puppy starts to turn the corner.

Thanks, I checked out the site - a definite consideration.

Give him pedialyte! A dropper full every hour, the danger of Parvo is death by dehydration and the pedialyte will help balance his electrolytes. Get the unflavored kind he will be less likely to reject it other then that there isnt much you can do the key is to keep him hydrated so his little body can get through this. So sorry I wish him a speedy recovery!!

oh you can also freeze some and crack into little ice chips to see if he will take it that way Parvo causes sever nausea so he may reject any attempts it will be hard.

Awww, Jules....still good, healing thoughts with you, your family and "Mr. Tuffy"....sounds like that would be an appropriate nick name for him if he endures all this:~)

Big hugs...

The pup didn't make it. :frown1: I'm very very sad. DD is handling it pretty well, all things considered.

We waited and prepped a long time to get a family dog, and this was our first. Not that I would want to teach her that animals are replaceable, necessarily, but we now have to wait at least a year for another dog since our home is now contaminated with the virus.

If I had any lessons learned from this, it would be to tell you guys to make sure the animals you adopt have had their complete rounds of shots before you bring them home. Our pup only had the first round of parvo shots, and likely had the virus before he was vaccinated, or he contracted it from the shot itself. Parvo is ugly, and can still be contracted after their shots, but the chances decrease. Just like in the baby world, there are non-vaccine believers in the animal world, but I'm not one of those people.

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement and good thoughts. :hug2:

Aww, ***Hugs to you and DD***. We just lost Gus a few weeks ago, and it's sure not easy. My SIL told me they can get parvo (I guess usually) from flys carrying it getting on their food. Weird. She told us when we got Gus to make sure not to let food sit out and keep the bag sealed up. Not that outside dogs care what they eat or chew on, but it's a thought for when you get another one. Waiting a whole year's not fun. Maybe you should get her a fish. But those always died FAST for us except one Beta named Marlin. Lol He was fun. : )

Oh no, Julee. I'm just so, so sorry:frown1::frown1:. I feel so awful for your guys. I just can't imagine. What stinks even more, is that you have to wait so long for a new little guy. I'm so sorry:(
