It really is easy to make your own! Use about 7 teaspoons to equal the amt. in a store bought packet.
This is by no means the one and only way to make a taco seasoning. You can tweak the amounts of each spice in order to get the right combo for your family. If it were me, I would just use this as a guideline and make sure that I got some of each spice in the dish! You can add more or less cayenne pepper, depending on how hot you want to make your tacos.
Mix the following organic ingredients together and keep fresh in an airtight container (recycle an old spice jar) for up to 6 months:
6 teaspoons of chili powder
6 teaspoons paprika
6 ½ teaspoons cumin
2 ½ teaspoons onion powder
2 ½ teaspoon of garlic powder
1 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon oregano
derketchup

if you can't afford organic spices, the hispanic food sections of WalMart and many other grocery stores have little baggies of spices for around $1 each. They fill a McCormick sized spice bottle. I love them!

Awesome! Now to get all of those organic spices. This may take awhile, but I'll get them eventually!
Thanks!

Sandy, order them from Azure Standard (http://www.azurestandard.com/). They'll UPS it to you. I am fortunate enough to have a lady who has it delivered monthly, and it's a co op thing, so I don't have to worry about shipping. : ) But, I get all my spices there in bulk for SO much cheaper! And they have tons of organics too.
Organic, Mild Chili powder 4 oz @ $4.55 (http://www.azurestandard.com/shop/search?q=chili+powder&submit=)
Natural, Paprika 4 oz @ $2.30 (http://www.azurestandard.com/shop/search?q=Paprika&submit=)
Organic, Cumin 4 oz @ $4.85 (http://www.azurestandard.com/shop/search?q=Cumin&submit=)
Organic, Onion Granules 4 oz @ $3.45 (http://www.azurestandard.com/shop/search?q=Onion+granules&submit=)
(their powder is dust, granules are like the powder from the store)
Organic, Garlic Granules 4 oz @ $3.75 (http://www.azurestandard.com/shop/search?q=Garlic+granules&submit=)
Organic, Cayenne 4 oz @ $4.55 (http://www.azurestandard.com/shop/search?q=cayenne+&submit=)
Organic, Oregano 4 oz @ $5.25 (http://www.azurestandard.com/shop/search?q=oregano&submit=)
TOTAL COST (+ shipping) $28.70
And that would make a LOT. I think your standard bottles are roughly 2 oz? Depends on the spice. I know the oregano is a HUGE bag, but the onion and garlic are smaller. But they last a while, and like I said, I buy what herbs and spices I don't grow from there and I love it. : ) I was actually thinking of trying out this recipe and making jelly jars of it for Christmas gifts for the family.... Hmmmm You couldn't layer it, but you could decorate the jar and give it with rice, or a tortilla warmer (as if my mil needs another one of those!!!) or a nice bamboo or wood spoon.... Thinking, thinking.... Hubby's mom is Mexican, so this family's all about the homemade Mexican food. His mom's a good cook, so we'll try it out on him soon. : )
I just noticed, no salt? I wonder if it needs it? I get my Redmond RealSalt from them too and I LOVE it! :)

My BF is Mexican and his mother is also a very good cook. I would love to do something similar that you are doing for her. I doubt she needs anything though... A tortilla warmer might be a good idea but she has so much tupperware stuff that I'm almost positive she has that. She also doesn't make many taco's. It's mostly tamales and mexican rice. Let me know what you are doing for her so I can copy =) and appear creative to her lol

Lol ok, I'll let you know! : ) I think I'm having tacos in the middle of next week. I need to cut the recipe down way far and try it for one package size to see. I thought of something other than a tortilla warmer that would be fun the other day, but I cannot for the life of me remember what it is. Grr, getting TOO OLD.
Thinking
Thinking....
Thinking.......

Oh, it was one of those onion or garlic savers you see in the produce section sometimes. I have an onion one, and everyone thinks it's so cool. I was washing it the other day and thinking about getting a garlic one. I don't think they last any longer, but the cut onions don't stink up the fridge, and you don't get the little skins all over the place. I don't think she has one of those, and she uses a LOT of onion and garlic. And maybe a nice spoon. She breaks all hers like they're going out of style. Lol
I'll let you know though.... Maybe you could find a good Mexican Rice recipe and layer the ingredients yourself. Just be sure to attach a note how much and a reminder to stir the layers.... I can see my mil and my Mom (or me on a really bad day) forgetting to do that and wondering why it tastes so weird. LOL

I tried this one last week, I made enough for one recipe. Hubby liked it, and it was nice to have everything mixed before instead of doing it as I'm throwing it in and guessing like I always do. LOL
I did forget to make rice though....
