SMILE Big Lots: Organic/Natural products found

Ok, so I haven't been to Big Lots in forever, but I took a run through there today. OMG, I couldn't believe all of the organic food and natural products that I found.

I think Big Lots is kind of YMMV on what each store carries, but I found the following tonight:

Method - air freshners, laundry products, hand soap refills
Toms of Maine - toothpaste
Kashi
Horizon Milk
Dole Organic dried fruit
Annies Natural Mac'n Cheese
Muir Glen - tomatos and soup
Apple and Eve Organic Juice and Lemonade
Bear Naked Granola
Cascadian Farm Cereal
Back to Nature - TONS of cereal bars and granola bars

Other stuff too, but I can't remember it all.

I know Big Lots doesn't take coupons, but it's just a reminder to keep your eyes open b/c you never know where you might find a good deal!

I only bought the Bear Naked Granola, b/c I'm kinda weird about where food comes from. Anyone have a reason why we shouldn't buy food from Big Lots?

WOW that is amazing. I would buy from Big Lots as long as they were not expired or close to expired.

I've bought Bear Naked granola and Tom's toothpaste from Big Lots before for an unbelievable price. I always check expiration dates at BL - but so far, no problems!

It is YMMV though because the Big Lots closest to my house doesn't carry any organics at all and we live in a big city. But the one about 15+ miles away in a smaller and not-so-great area carries TONS of organics. It's really weird.

I just went today, after a friend told me about the Cascadian Farm Jelly. $4 for two 30 oz. jars of Strawberry Preserves. That is a great price!!! I have been buying grape, b/c of price alone. DS eats PB&J everyday! I also got the ABC pasta--thought it would be great for eating and for projects!

I also saw Vitasoy Orgainc Milk, indv. bottles, $? The organic products are not all together, so you really have to look.

I would buy food from Big Lots--did today--but just check and double check the exp. dates. Companies may just be changing the packaging or the size of the product.

Big Lots is officially going on my once-a-week shopping hits. Yesterday I found:

Kashi TLC crackers - $1.49
Garden of Eatin' pita chips, cheetos and cheese puffs - $1.30
Apple and Eve lemonade - .40
Fresh Nature's Own Organic bread - $1.10

(Yes, I know just because the cheetos are "made with organic corn" doesn't make them healthier, but dang I love me some cheetos!)

I'm thinking I might add this to my list as well. The "deals" elsewhere in the store really are not that great, but I will check the food section.

Wow. Sounds pretty good. I used to live closer to a big lots and go there to check stuff out a lot. We are further away from a big lots here, but I still know where it is. It helps me to have more than one reason to go that far, though.

Can I hijack this thread to tell a funny Big Lots story? We all know Big Lots isn't exactly known for their stellar customer service. I was there once, and as usual there were 10 customers in line and one register open. So we're all waiting, hemming and hawing, shifting our weight, and the cashier looked up and said "I quit. I Q-U-I-T. Quit." And she walked out the door. I don't know why I still go there.

This was for the single serve bottles - 12oz maybe...? I hadn't tried their lemonade before, and I really liked it.

Thanks for the post. I need to check out the Big Lot in my area now. It's not on my way but it's not that far. It's right across from Kroger so I might need to add that to my weekly trip.

Thought I'd update some of the finds this week...I didn't really make a list of what I saw, so it'll be a little bleek... I really wanted to get more Cas. Farms Strawberry Jam, but they didn't have any :(

Erewhon Organic Instant Oatmeal--8 packets for $1 (We <3 oatmeal, so this was awesome)
Clifford Kid's Cereal $2/box
Salad Dressing--can't remember the brand or the price, so I'm a big help there!
Regenie's Chips $1.50/bag

There was definately more (cereal especially), but I was a couple of days ago with a very active little boy!

Heather, I stopped in yesterday, and my store had a ton of the strawberry jam still.

I found more of the same, really: Organic Claussen pickles for $1.30. I must say, these pickles are delicious! DD and I will sit and eat an entire bowl of them.

My best find was the HUGE (2+ lbs) boxes of Kashi Mountain Medley Granola for $6. The small boxes at Kroger are $4.99, so I thought that was a great deal. This stuff is so yummy. I've been eating the heck out of it with vanilla yogurt.

Also:
Polomer organic grape jelly for $1.30
Back to Nature fruit bars (not organic) $1.30/box
Hansens apple juice boxes (not organic) $2/8pk
Honest Tea organic pomegranate & acai .50/bottle

What I love about their pricing is that the organic stuff is priced the same as the conventional stuff. For ex, all the cereal boxes are $2 whether it's organic Earth's Best or General Mill Cocoa Puffs.

I also saw a ton of Method soy candles for $4 (I think).

Yeah, I had seen other Method stuff there but not cleaners, so I grabbed a couple different ones to try - bathroom/shower spray and a spray for stainless steel. But they also had counter cleaner, and something I else I can't remember.

I get hand soap from Big Lots. They have "Home and Body Organics" liquid soap for $2 a bottle. Our store has lavender and lemon. I like the lemon in the kitchen and the lavender in the bathrooms.

I found these, too, and the blue chips are YUMMY! I looked on their website to see if I could find them at another store, and they don't have them pictured, so wonder if they're a discontinued item. :(

Also, I found the large variety 3-pk boxes (18 bars) of Kashi TLC bars for $4. That's $1.34/box which is pretty good.

Did anyone else find that their peanut butter tasted... odd? I checked the date before buying it too (since Big Lots often has close-to or past date products).

Yeah, what peanut butter was it?

I always check the dates, however I haven't tried anything yet that I remember tasting funky.

It was the Marantha... but the dates were fine! I didn't get the Arrowhead because the dates were too close on that one.

My daughter's eating the peanut butter since it's the only one open, but she doesn't really like it.

My 9 year old DD doesn't really like the flavor either and so I caved and bought Skippy again just for her. I normally would insist that she give it more time to grow on her, but she really LOVES peanut butter and since she eats it everyday, I feel that was one small sacrifice considering that she likes everything else organic that she has tried so far.

Maybe that's it... the jar we had open before I opened the Marantha was Skippy Natural.

She likes the freshly ground peanut butter from Whole Foods, so I don't think it's a matter of liking sugar in her peanut butter, but I guess the Marantha may be a little different.

Oh well! At least I gave it a try fairly inexpensively!

Is that a good price? I looked at the bottles at Target and they were for more loads.

The All Detergent is regularly on sale for $3.33 or so for 32 loads. The shelf price @ Shaw's is somewhere around $5. All that being said, it sounds like a reasonable price for eco-friendly. Too bad you couldn't use the $1/1 Q's @ Big Lots :(. That would make an even better deal.

I went to Big Lots today to get DD her Guitar from Santa. Can't beat the $20 price. Since it is right next to Fry's Electronics, DH dropped DS and me off and took the peanut with him to get some xmas gifts.

I got uber excited when I saw Health Valley Cereal for $1.80! We didn't get any since we have so much Kashi cereal at home but now i knwo where to go when we run low .

I saw some Gerber organic clothing items and crib sheets at Big Lots tonight. The sheets were $6, but I forgot the price of the other items.

Default Re: Big Lots: Organic/Natural products found

I went yesterday and found:

Honest Tea Organic Peach for $0.60/bottle
Annie's semi-organic cereals $2/box
6-packs of Hansen's natural sodas (manderin lime and raspberry flavors)$2
Muir Glen organic pasta sauces $2/jar
Another brand of organic bottled teas (can't remember name) $0.60/bottle
16 ct. boxes of Stash Tea bags $2/box

That's about all they had as far as organic/naturals, but another one that I haven't been to in probably a year has a better selection I'm sure, they usually do. They had the Tom's of Maine products too, but no fluoride-free items.

I have found earths best and Gerber organics baby food there before for 25 cents for the large or small jar. the small jars were stage 1 and the large jars were stage 2 I believe. I couldn't believe they were only .25 cents each. wow that was a great find. It was in the baby section by the diapers. Hope y'all find some still there.

My Big Lots (MD) has the Honest Tea (only White Peach and Pomegranate) for .$60, too.

They also had Seventh Generation paper towels for $1 per roll and the 12-pack toilet paper for $6.00. I should've bought more, because they were sold out on my next trip.

Default Re: Big Lots: Organic/Natural products found

We went to Big Lots last night. It is 40 minutes from us so we don't get to go often. but I found some sweet deals there. here are a few of them:
Good Earth Tea's $2.00
Swanson organic chicken broth 16oz $1.25
Carapelli Italy Virgin Olive Oil 17 oz $3.99
Fresh Finds all Natural Chopped Garlic Large Spice Jar from Canada $1.00
Fresh Finds All Natural Chopped Onion large Spice Jar from Canada $1.00
Beech Nut baby Food Pears & Pineapple .30 cents 8/10 expir
Natures Goodness All Natural Baby food Vegetable & beef Dinner .25 cents
Pace Chunky Salsa Mild Large jar $2.00 (this is made by A Division of Campbell's soup in Texas and has all natural flavorings and no preservatives and very low sodium & no fats)

we got bunches more but these were really good finds. I winded up spending 87.00 there just on food items. and it was mostly organic. I did find some nice pasta from Italy that was all natural and looks really good. If it does not say certified organic on it and it looks like a good product. I will read all of the ingredients. I know that doesn't cover pesticides and fertilizer, but at least it is better then regular stuff. And we are really pinching pennies right now. so the All natural products are also good right now.

We went to Save-a-lot also and really made out like a bandit there. There were great deals and lots of organic stuff there. It was a $150.00 night, but I have enough food to last us the rest of the month and then some. the only thing I will have to buy is milk, bread, & eggs. everything else we got covered.

I was really excited at the organics that I found at big Lots. It gives me another outlet to buy name brand organics at a extremely cheap price. Actually I figure I got organic for less then I would have paid for regular foods at the regular grocery store. My daughter pays 59 cents for the same size jar of beechnut that I got for 30 cents. that is half the cost. an great dates on them.

I w really surprised. I figured I would get there and they might have some of the stuff y'all had mentioned but they would have bad dates on them. and that wasn't the case at all. I mean , I did find a couple things that had a month before expiration, but I didn't buy them. but everything else had wonderful dates on them. OI am very pleased and from this day forward. big lots and Save-a-lot will be part of my grocery store shopping from here on out.

Thank you everyone for opening my eyes to all the great finds. I think that save-a-lots must be owned by the same company. where ever you find a big lots. it seems there is a Save-A-Lot. Anyways I am sold on them for sure. I got an all natural chicken there . it had no hormones and no antibiotics and no sodium pumped into it. It was a good price of .99 cents a pound. I normally pay a bit more for all natural chicken at the organic store. so I was happy about that find too. And it was from the USA.

All your finds sound wonderful! I went to my local Big Lots yesterday and was disappointed at what they had to offer for the first time in a long time. No Seventh Generation products or Beech Nut either. Looks like I will have to try another Big Lots on the other side of town when I visit Costco.

Today I saw a few things (MD store).

--Bombilla organic tea .$70/bottle
--Annies bunny crunch cereal $2
--Kashi cereal
--Cascadian Farms cereal
--Earth's Best Sesame Street cookies
--Knudsen's organic apple juice boxes 3-pack $1
--Wasa crisps

They had a lot of organic/natural bottled teas (Bombilla, Honest Tea), and vitamin water type drinks. I didn't get a chance to check them closely--my 3-year old was steering the cart, and well...

Big lots have crocs (the real thing) right now for 10 bucks, if anyone is into those. My kids live in them in the summertime. They used to have a recycling program, not sure if they still do, though.

They sure do! Here's the info that was just featured in Real Simple magazine:
Crocs: The manufacturer recycles used Crocs into new shoes and donates them to underprivileged families. Mail them to: Crocs Recycling West, 3375 Enterprise Avenue , Bloomington CA 92316.

Hubby got a bottle but hasn't tried it yet. I don't eat ketchup so I'll have to wait for him to give it a try before I can give you a review.

Hubby described it as sweet, robust, and definitely spicy. He likes it a lot.

I didn't know Big Lots carried organic stuff. Too bad they don't take coupons.

Thanks for the list!

I got to go to the Big Lots on 92 in Marietta/Acworth area while I was in GA. I got some GREAT scores:

2 small bottles The Healing Garden Organics body wash- $1.30
7 2-pks Tom's toothpaste- $5.00
1 double pack Kashi cereal- $4.00
1 large green works dish liquid- $3.00
1 4-pk organic steaz- $3.00 (I think)

I also saw some green works dbl pks of the dish liquid, method products & method kids' bath stuff. They had some other food products as well, but I was on such a limited budget, plus I had to make sure I could fit it in the van for the drive home.
