I will take you along in my journey into organics one baby step at a time.
I live in a area with pretty limited organic area. No Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, or Wild Oats. Just 2 conventional grocery stores and a SuperWalmart and a Kmart. No farmers markets, CSA, or anything for hundreds of miles...so it's going to be baby steps for me all the way. One product at a time. And if I can stockpile something...even better.

Organic Valley Milk - 1% Fat

This is my first week of officially trying a new organic item and writing about it.
This weeks item is Organic Valley Milk - 1% Fat.
I normally buy non-fat milk but our pediatrician has asked us to increase our almost 3 year old twins fat intake a little bit to help them as they are a little underweight, otherwise healthy...just a little extra fat for them he feels will help them out and is good for the brain development he says.
The DEAL:
Albertsons in the Rocky Mountain region has this week Organic Valley Milk 64 Oz. $2.99 Each and there were $1.00 printable coupons at http://www.organicvalley.coop/ (you can print 2 times) making the milk $1.99 for a half gallon.
So was this a deal?:
Not really.
Why? Because I usually stock up on milk when Albertsons marks it down to $1.00 a gallon (because it is close to it's sell by date) and toss a few gallons in my freezer.
But if I can not find it marked down then milk runs about $3.50 a gallon here non sale price. So $1.99 for a half gallon is about .50c more per gallon price if I bought conventional milk not on sale.
But its organic...and paying .50c more seems to be a small pay off. So I was willing to give it a try and see how the family likes it,
Hypothesis: (What preconceived notion did I have of this product before buying it?)
I noticed and heard from folks like berlinsmommy that organic milk was "ultra pasteurized" so I kind of thought that the milk might taste funky...cooked somehow.
Conclusion:
Came home from the store with my 2 1/2 gallons of Organic Valley milk and tossed them in the fridge while I prepared some dinner for my crew (homemade soup). I poured 4 of my 5 kiddos a cup of milk and they ate drank and were merry. No complaints except for a small beg from Parker for some chocolate syrup in his as he grabbed the BBQ sauce from the fridge.
My oldest daughter is lactose intolerant so she did not taste test. My husband does not like the taste of milk.
I had a bottle of water with my dinner. But poured a small cup of milk after dinner and gave it a try. Tastes like milk.

So will I buy it again?
Only if it was on sale with coupons again. I can not fathom paying almost $4.00 for a half gallon of milk non-sale price. I was OK with the $1.99 for a half gallon and would definitely buy more at that price.

| | Teehee, you were all 'science'y. Neat! Glad it tastes like milk. Milk is one of my things were I'm kind of weird on it anyways, so throw it something new on it and I get a lot more weary of it. |

| | I'm famous, I'm in your blog!! Good for you, organic milk is yummy. Don't tell juju, but wait until Horizon is on sale at Smith's if your Smith's carries it and use the $1 coupons. They often put it on sale for $2.79 or $2.59. Its wierd though, only certain varieties (like only 2%) will be on sale sometimes, not all of them. Also, my Smith's often has Horizon half gallons that are short-dated for dirt cheap (under $2), so a real steal with the $1 coupons. |
