Convincing DH

I talked with my DH about making the switch over to organic and natural foods. He said that you can't reap all of the benefits unless you go 100%. Well, I'm pretty sure I'll never get to 100% or it'll take years so how can I convince him it's still worth it? Every little bit helps right? Is there any scientific proof that making the change is worth it?

I know he's rather controversial, but have him read a Kevin Trudeau book "The Natural Cures They Don't Want You To Know About" or "More Natural Cures" and he'll learn a lot.
I am a KT supporter and agree with much of what he speaks of. He also lists lots of resources and where he gets his info from, especially in the second book (the More one)

While I'm sure your husband is a very nice and loving man, I'm giving you permission to ignore him about this subject for the time being.

Any change, however small, that you make towards promoting a healthier lifestyle is worth it. Try doing little things that make a big impact. Shop the dirty dozen (you'll hear that like a broken record around here.) Learn to read labels and try cutting out/cutting back on items with high fructose corn syrup.

In this community we're all pretty careful about what we spend. I think you've gotta start somewhere and if you eventually make it to 100% and it takes years to get there then the journey is worth it. No one is here is 100%. I'd even venture out on a limb to say that a lot of people who say that they are 100% aren't- everyone has slip-ups or things that they aren't knowledgeable about.

The point of OGD is to take small steps towards achieving the shade of green that is right for your life. Try not to get too frustrated.

Kristen hit the nail on the head. Do what you and your family can do. Every bit does help. I have been trying to live an organic, healthier lifestyle since my early teens but time and money has hampered that at times. I am more committed than ever since I have had children. But we are nowhere close to 100%. I try to shop as much good, organic produce that I can find that fit the dirty dozen as well as my dairy and meats if possible. But some weeks are better than others. Don't beat yourself up. Every little bit counts!!!

Every bit helps! And you will not find OGD members judging you because we are all here for the journey.

I myself have focused on organic beef, natural chicken, and organic milk. I am willing to pay a bit more for those 3 items. Right now produce and other organic products (cereals, grains, snacks, etc) are only bought if I can find a half way decent deal. So while I may be eating kraft mac-n-cheese its made with organic milk! LOL (seriously I can not fathom paying $3 for a box of Annies mac-n-cheese)

Im attempting to grow some organic produce and if organic carrots or bananas are on sales Ill pick them up. But since I don't live where it is easy to go organic I do what I can.

I agree. Americans have a tendency towards on/off, yes/no, right/wrong thinking.

It's 100% impossible to be 100% organic unless you have loads of time and/or money to put towards this goal. It's like exercise -- if you only work out 10 minutes a day, it's waaay better than doing nothing!

Prizm, my DH is the same way. He doesn't think that we need to buy organic, but I do anyway. I'm the one grocery shopping for our family, so if I can find a good deal on something I gobble it up! DH can't complain when I find organic items cheaper than conventional or even free. He may ask, "Do we need that?" And sometimes the answer is no. That doesn't make it any different than the bazillion chips he will consume if they come into the house...he just doesn't say anything about the chips. So which is right?

You can't worry about the percantage of organic you are. You just need to do the best you can for your family. Once you have your family handled well, then you can move on to a bigger picture. Also, "going organic" doesn't encapsulate everything about living well for the earth. You could be buying all organic products but throw everything in the trash (probably plastic trash bags), including all the product wrappers etc. Is that a better way than not buying all organic and recycling product packaging?

I hope you can get DH on board easier than I am. It's a balancing act with a multiple of things to consider.

With my dh I did a lot of reading aloud to him (from Don Colbert's books to begin with and other books along our journey over the years) - I still do that because I have to *remind* him from time to time. ~grin~

My DH finally agreed. I think yesterday pushed me over the edge to definitely say, "Yes we are going organic." I had to put my dog to sleep because she had cancer throughout her body. I have many co-workers, family and friends with cancer. I think all the chemicals and GMO's in our food contributes. Even if it doesn't, I'll still be eating healthier. Thanks for all the suggestions and support.

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. I know from experience how tough that can be.
Also, I totally agree about the chemicals and hormones and everything else contributing to the cancer.
My dad passed away last year from cancer (AT AGE 53!!) and I don't EVER want to go through what he did. That's part of what made me cross over. And KT's books helped me along and some others that he suggests...talking about all kinds of info on the FDA and the pharmaceutical companies, and the food industry....money, money, money...if we aren't sick, we don't buy meds, if we don't buy meds, the pharm industry doesn't make money. Chemicals can be patented, NATURAL remedies cannot, so we always hear bad things about natural stuff...I believe that more and more everyday.
Good for you and your husband!! I'm sure you'll both be happier and healthier for the decision!
