THUMBS DOWN Stick to Sargento Cheese

Ok, so I was reading on Sargento's website, b/c I love their cheese and I found this in their FAQ: (bold added by me)

    Q. What is the source of the enzymes in your cheeses?
Rennets (enzymes) are added when making cheese to thicken the mixture to form the curds. These milk-clotting enzymes originate in microbial (synthetic) and animal sources. The manufacturing process of most varieties of cheese (all cured or ripened cheeses) involves enzyme coagulation.

Most Sargento shredded and sliced cheeses and refrigerated natural cheese snacks are made with non-animal rennets. The only Sargento natural cheeses that may contain animal enzymes are those that contain Romano, Provolone, Asiago, or Jarlsberg cheeses. Those include: Fancy Parmesan & Romano Shredded Cheese, 6 Cheese Italian Shredded Cheese, Reduced Fat 4 Cheese Italian Shredded Cheese, ChefStyle Mozzarella & Provolone Shredded Cheese, Deli Style Sliced Provolone, Reduced Fat Deli Style Sliced Provolone, Romano Wedges, Bistro Blends Mozzarella & Asiago with Roasted Garlic Shredded Cheese, Deli Style Sliced Jarlsberg Cheese, and Sargento Limited Edition Aged Provolone shredded, sliced, and snack cheeses. The cheese dip in our non-refrigerated Sargento Snacks, Cheese Dips!, Cheese Dip & Sticks, Cheese Dip & Cheddar Sticks, Cheese Dip & Pretzels, and Cheese Dip & Crackers, is made with beef rennet. If you are interested in knowing whether any other Sargento products contain animal products, you should know that Sargento Bistro Melts Swiss Portobello Sliced Cheese contains chicken.

Animal rennet is bad enough to think about, but why in the world do some of their cheeses contain CHICKEN???? Chicken stock flavoring, I'm guessing?

Also, I emailed them to see if they use rBST-free diary in their products, though I already can guess the answer to be "no", since it's not on their website. I'll update if they respond.

Sargento makes no actual cheese. They buy, slice or shred, and package cheese that they buy from various cheese makers.

I'm not sure what the story is on the chicken maybe the srooms are cooked in chicken broth.

    My question:

Is the dairy used in your cheese rBST-free?

If not, are you looking for ways to supply consumers demand for
    rBST-free products?

    Sincerely,

    Julee xxxx

    Their response:

Thank you for your question. We'll follow up with a letter to your
    postal address.

Ok, I got the response. Basically, like mnnice said, they "don't buy milk or make cheese":
There is no feasible scientific test to differentiate dairy products from bST-supplemented cows from those of untreated cows. All milk contains naturally-occurring bST. Even if dairy farmers and cheesemakers indicated that no supplemental bST was used, our high ethical standards would not allow us to claim our products to be free from supplemental bST, since we cannot scientifically verify such a claim.
We have confidence in the FDA...
The last line seals the deal, and I'll just stop there so you can all roll your eyeballs back to the normal placement in their sockets.

There was also a fact sheet included on bST.

My dh said that whoever wrote that letter and FAQ must have gotten a fine degree at the school of cover-your-a**-letter-writing.

I give them high props for responding, and making their case. They also sent me (1) .50/1 any item coupon.

LOL I sent them a comment about their use of meat in their cheese, and I got an email that said "we'll let our marketing department know what you said."

    Uhh... thanks?

Hmm, you tell them you're concerned about hormones & dead animals in their cheese, so they send you a coupon to buy more!

Unfortunately, this problem isn't just relegated to Sargento, most cheese makers use rennet & who knows what else.

True, but some companies are using microbial rennet now.

Oxid, I admire you. I don't think I'd ever be able to fully go vegan, but I'm trying to be as conscientious of a vegetarian as I can.

Yeah, I know. I was just picking on Sargento b/c I like their cheese, and usually buy a lot of it. It goes on sale often, and they put out good coupons.

I have made the switch to rBST free milk, and I'd like to follow suit with other dairy products.

I am nowhere near in a position to give up cheese. (Like derk, I admire you!) I'm just trying to be an informed consumer. At least, as informed as they want me to be.

Oh yum. :( I wonder if this all applies to their newer "Naturals" line, too? What is wrong with the food supply in american now-a-days. (Shaking head, rolling eyes, sighing) You'd think they'd use rBST dairy with all the uproar about it all. I really hate buying a single thing conventional any more.
