    Default Baby Carrots

I was forwarded this information to me so I had to look it up on snopes.
    snopes.com: Baby Carrots
How true is this to organic carrots such as by Earthbound?

EEEW! And my daughter loves these in her lunches every day! Would Earthbound tell us about their carrots? Earthbound is what I usually buy.

Since EB is organic I would think that they are not allowed to use chlorine. This is gross...

I just assumed baby carrots were all small to start with. I never thought otherwise due to always getting stumpy carrots when I made my last attempt at a garden in AZ. Yah I am a dork. As for the chlorine, I hope that is not the case because organic carrots are now of the regular staples that I like to always have on hand for the kids to eat.

I agree and would hope that organic baby carrots do not have chlorine. However, there is one way to be safe when you are buying baby carrots. You need to buy BABY CARROTS and not BABY-CUT CARROTS. The bag will tell you the difference. Baby carrots are grown and harvested as babies; baby-cut carrots are cut from large carrots and rinsed...

I have never seen these carrot smilies before -- they are cute. I hope they do not take away from the seriousness of this subject.

Thank you for the link and welcome to OGD!
I really doubt that organic carrots have chlorine on them because that would make them no longer organic. The whiteness is them drying out (speaking from experience). I am pretty sure baby carrots are completely safe to eat; however, I don't know if I will continue to buy them since they are sweeter and less nutritious (according to the article). To be on the safe side I will peel and cut my own carrots unless the baby carrots are on sale or I need them in order to save me some prep time.

That's what we do Joan, I realized that I could get a pound of organic whole carrots cheaper than I could a pound of organic baby carrots, 79 cents a pound versus $1.50 a pound. I keep a baggie of peeled and chopped carrots for DH and I to snack on and for him to pack in his lunch. It only takes an extra few minutes a couple of times a week, and I usually do it while I'm preparing dinner and already have the cutting board and peeler out.

I just got off the phone with Earthbound Farms. Very nice lady. She explained to me that their baby carrots are gown specificially to be baby carrots, extra sweet & small. They pick them, rinse them, put them through mechanical peelers, and drop them into chilled slightly chlorinated water. This chlorinated water meets very strict organic and federal regulations. The chlorinated water is to kill any bacteria that may have gotten on the carrots from the machinery or during the processing. She said every company that makes carrots would use chlorine at some point in the process.

And she's sending me coupons for my inquiry.

That still doesn't seem right to use chlorine even if it is only slightly.

I love it - you're like our official organic PI!

I have read this about baby carrots in a book before (but which one I can't remember).

I buy both kinds, actually, depends on the sale. Kroger often runs the 'regular' organic carrots at $1/lb, so I'll buy those when they do.

For those with kiddos - having them peel the carrots is a great way to engage them in the kitchen and get them excited about the veggies they eat. DD also thinks it's fun having carrot circles instead of sticks. (Whatever works as long as she eats them!)

When they say "slightly chlorinated water", I wonder if it's the same amount of chlorination that would be in city tap water? If so, it might be the equivalent of washing them under the tap.

I checked the bag of organic baby cut carrots (can't remember the variety--some farm) and it says "carrots" as ingredient. Maybe they tihnk the chlorine all washes off?

Pre-washed salad greens (actually, pretty much ANY pre-washed veggie) are washed in the same solution.

Why does this NOT surprise me? Hence why I insist on washing all of my produce regardless.
