LIGHT BULB Is your natural peanut butter too hard??

Every time I've bought natural peanut butter, its too hard to get out of the container, its like cement.

Anyway, I was at my mom's house and saw the funniest thing. My mom opens a new jar and tells my dad, "Hey, I just opened a new jar of peanut butter, come help me!"

My dad comes over and grabs the jar with 2 hands. My mom gets out the hand mixer and puts on one beater instead of 2. She shoves the beater in the peanut butter and turns it on while dad holds on tight.

When she's done its whipped up a bit and is the normal consistency and easy to spread!

LOL! Can't say I have that problem. I've been buying the Kirkland brand organic peanut butter from Costco. I just stir it a little bit before I spread it on anything.

    Hahah-that's too funny!

    Bexx,
Do you have to stir the Kirkland brand every time and do you have to refrigerate it?

I know some require refrigeration and some don't.

Nope - it doesn't say it needs to be refrigerated. I keep mine in the cupboard and yes, I have to stir it a little every time because the oil tends to settle at the top.

If I stick it in the fridge it's a better consistency, but if I keep it in there too long it's really hard to spread. So I just stick a small container in the fridge at work for the week and it works fine as long as I change the container out every week.

And that reminds me - I need to get some peanut butter this weekend!

    Thanks Bexx! Repped you

I love the idea of putting a little in the fridge. I noticed with the ones I am supposed to refrigerate it does the same thing (becomes harder to spread) if I put it in the fridge.

I buy the Smuckers Natural peanut butter and I stir it before I refrigerate and I don't really have to stir it again. One tip I found somewhere on the internet was this. When you bring it home sit the jar upside down in the cupboard, so that when you turn it over to open it and stir it the oil is on the bottom of the jar. Makes it easier to stir and less likely to glop oil on the counter.

I do the same (stir then refrigerate) with the Whole Foods brand peanut butter. I never thought about the upside down trick, though. Thanks for the tip!

Great idea! Usually for us the peanut butter is soft and smoth at first, but us I get closer to the bottem it starts getting very hard. Hopefully that tip should do the trick, thanks!

I cheat and use the Skippy Natural. Basically it's peanuts, salt, sugar, and palm oil. So it's not as healthy as truly natural peanut butter, but at $0.14 a jar I couldn't turn it down!
