NEWS McCartney's estranged wife gets steamed up over milk

Mon Nov 19, 11:28 AM ET

Paul McCartney's estranged wife Heather Mills Monday accused consumers of meat and dairy products of fueling global warming, as she launched a vegan campaign at London's famous Speaker's Corner.

Mills, who is engaged in an increasingly bitter divorce battle with the former Beatle, suggested that people could drink the milk of rats or cats, rather than milking cows.

Viva, an animal rights campaign group, claims that dairy and meat products are major causes of greenhouse gases.

"There are fields and fields of grain just miles from starving children in Africa, being shipped to Europe to feed our livestock," she said, unveiling billboards for the campaign at the Hyde Park corner site.

"There are 25 alternative milks available in health shops and supermarkets," she added, saying she turned vegan when an African woman at Live 8 asked her: "Why don't people stop drinking cows' milk lattes?"

"Why do we not drink rats' milk, cats' milk or dogs' milk?"

The 39-year-old was speaking to a group of journalists -- and a few tourists -- standing in front of a poster showing her in a sultry pose and skimpy top with the slogan: "Hey Meaty, you're making me so hot!"

Another poster showed the former model -- who had one leg amputated after an accident -- accusing ecologists of hypocrisy, next to the line: "You haven't got a leg to stand on!"

Eyebrows were raised when she first turned up for the event, as the mobile billboard showed a giant poster for a domestic violence hotline, which was then removed to show the Viva adverts.

Leaked documents from the divorce battle between Mills and McCartney alleged that the Beatles legend had been violent towards her. But her spokeswoman said the domestic violence ad was coincidental.

"The domestic violence posters were for an old campaign that is nothing to do with us. We just allowed the driver to keep them there until the last minute," she said.
I don't think I could drink another animals milk. Even goat milk gives me the creeps..but then so does cows really, so there have you, heh.

Milk has pus in it!

Lol... ok, well that's all I remember from the Skinny B!tch book. But yeah, I was always kinda lactose intolerant anyway, so giving milk up was not a big deal. And almond milk is really yummy!

Now cheese on the other hand... well that's a different matter. *sigh*

I'll use milk if a recipe calls for it - but I won't drink like a glass of it. And I really try to not use milk at all if I can help it.

I use soy milk for cooking (think mac n cheese or creamy soups), but I don't think it would work for baking.

I also find milk gross. Well, except for that glass bottle of unhomogenized, free-range, grass fed, no hormones no rbST milk I got from whole foods. It was GOOOOD!

Being kinda a devil's advocate post here. Sure there are places where animals are treated inhumanely and by all means, I support any legislature to stop it, but there are also small farmers out there and households that treat animals very humanely, even better than some people treat each other. I don't see a problem with drinking goat/cow's milk in those cases.

From a medical standpoint, I have a big problem with a website that I consider to be misinformed stating "And dairy products may actually cause osteoporosis, not prevent it, since their high-protein content leaches calcium from the body." Sorry no way I am ever going to believe that. Too many valid studies showing otherwise.

Now that being said, I do primarily drink soy milk, but also use dry milk for cooking and eat cheese and yogurt.

I'm with Bexx in that I just can't give up cheese. I could pass on milk just about any day though.

actually, milk does harm some people instead of help. Asians and Africans do not have centuries of milk-drinkers in their genes. Yet if they eat their indiginous diets they do not develop osteoperosis.

Milk is absolutely not necessary for a healthy body. Although if you're not going to drink it, you do need to make sure that you're getting enough calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, and vitamin D from alternative sources that are easy to digest. So it basically means a LOT more work on the part of the consumer.

I think it was the Skinny B!tch book that said something like, "We are the only species to drink another species milk."

Kids are breast-fed until it's time to wean them and then they're switched over to cow's milk for the rest of their lives. And there absolutely is evidence to prove that milk can do more harm than good and actually causes people to gain weight.

From the time that we're kids we're ingrained with the message that drinking milk gives us healthy bones. We're bombarded with celebrities with milk moustaches telling us that "Milk does a body good!" and we automatically believe it. So parents pump milk into their kids like there's no tomorrow. Yet, people don't give a second thought to what goes on during the milking process or whether the cows that provide that milk are healthy or not or pumped with antibiotics and hormones or forced to give more milk than is naturally possible.

I don't know... everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I just know that I feel right about not drinking milk. I still struggle a lot with the dairy issue (cheese and ice cream OMG!)... it's a constant learning process for me. But this choice feels right.

I too think that the media and messages given about milk are misleading. The industry pushes milk like there is no other source of calcium other than milk. One a baby is weaned off the breast or bottle you are told to give them milk but it is not stressed enough how much milk they should be drinking. I think there are still many parents that have not given thier infants enough solid foods that by the time they are switching over to cows milk they are used to giving 6-8 bottles a day because they are mostly milk fed. While by 1 year they should really be mostly on solid foods. So here we have 6-8 bottles or sippy cups of milk being given to small kids, and then as they grow older they are given a cup at every meal etc (I mean every school lunch here gives milk as the only beverage option)

We drink milk but my little kids drink 1 glass a day, and I drink probbly a cup every 2 days. I do use it in cooking and baking. We do eat cheese and yogurt and ice cream. But the notion that you need so many servings of dairy is a bit much. We get calcium from leafy greens strawberries, and other sources and don't rely so much on dairy. For the most part we drink conventional milk, although I am really hunting for deals on organic milk now. But we drink go through about 1 to 1 1/2 gallons of milk a week for our family of 7. While I hear other large families tell me that they use 5-10 gallons of milk a week! Thats a whole lot of milk. I do have one child that is lactose intollerant and do notice even in myself that if I consume a lot of dairy in a day (can we say a big ol glass of ice cold egg nog?) that my stomach hurts and I get gassy (we call them milk farts) and dont feel too great?

Now I am not going to be drinking rats milk...but I don't think that we need to rely so heavily on dairy to get the nutrients we need.
