HOT I wish stores would put all the pesticides/herbisides/ and other nasty chemicals somewhere else!

Vent!

I love to garden, love to mosey around in the garden section of stores or nurseries. I have this uncanny knack of being able to spout off the latin name of most garden plants (drives my family crazy ). But I am also weirdly sensitive to chemicals. If I happen to walk down the aisle of the store that carries all the garden chemicals I start weezing (I had childhood asthma and the only thing that triggers an attack these days are christmas trees and the chemical aisle) and/or I break out in hives.

Even being on the next aisle or two over from the chemical aisle makes me feel ill. I can not imagine that having all these chemicals in such large quanities all concentrated inside a store is good for anyone.

I know they can not store them outside because if they got wet it would polute the water. But I sure wish there was somewhere they could store that junk and I could look at the agapanthus purpea and garden faries without getting sick.

Maybe they could just install a huge blower over the chemicals, one that has a built-in scrubber to catch the toxins.

I don't think I've had a problem @ garden stores, but I can't stand going down the "cleaning" aisle @ the regular grocery store. I think some of the big box stores keep them all outside during the summer months but under a roofed over area. Maybe you could talk to your local store that you normally shop at.

I hear you. I hate that aisle (and the housecleaning chemical isle). I avoid it at all costs, especially when I had babies with me or was pregnant.

My husband and I are currently in a stalemate on fertilizing the lawn. I want to use the clippings in the veggie garden but wont if he fertilizes it. The other day he bought some and stashed the bags under the kids seats in teh minivan. Just the 10 minutes they were in the car and I was feeling sick--and I wasn't sitting right above them!. Now my car stinks too. Grr

I'm with you all! I can't walk down those aisles either- it's such an awful smell and I too get headaches from it. And the laundry detergent aisles at regular grocery stores make my throat close up.

I think I have become more sensitive to the chemical smells since I switched to more organic foods. I think I'd be nervous if my throat started swelling. I *just* get congested if I'm around it for a short while, but I will start getting a headache if it's been too long.

Was looking around at Home Depot on Sunday, needed to pick up some organic potting mix and a new bird feeder and walked down the lawn chemical aisle in advertantly thinking that the bird feeders might be down that aisle and within 5 min I was feeling hot and starting to itch which means that hives were comming. I hurried out to my car to take some benedryl (the only thing that helps prevent a full on attack).

I sure wish there was an organic garden center around these parts. Do other areas have any such thing?

The chemicals allowed to be sold in Wyoming are different too. They allow malathion to be sold to everyone. Where I grew up that was controlled. Although the farmers would spray the crap everywhere anyways by air so not sure why it was controlled.

We're in the green part of the world - lots of organic garden shops around here.

I don't have that type of reaction in those aisles thankfully.

Do you have any local nurseries that you could go to instead? I need to get a new bird feeder too, since the raccoons or squirrels or whoever chewed through the rope to our last one. (It really wasn't a rope, but I couldn't think of what it really would be considered).

I know the chemical smell you're talking about...blech! I just have to avoid those aisles or hold my breath.
What's worse for me is the cleaner aisles in the store. How can people stand that stuff?

The local nursery is just about as bad as Home Depot and the "mart" stores. They sell the same nasty chemicals. Malithion is legal here and the local nursry must own stock in it!
