I will be posting some common gardening terms and definitions as time allows. I will post pictures whenever possible to help illistrate what I am talking about.

This will be a closed thread so that I can use it as a resource, if you have questions or a term you need defined please shoot me a PM and I will answer ASAP as well as add any additional terms to this guide.

Aerial Root

A root that develops from a location on a plant above the surface of the earth or water, as from a stem. For example, some orchids have aerial roots that grow from their stems and absorb water directly from the air.

Air Layering

a method of propagating a plant by girdling or cutting part way into a stem or branch and packing the area with a moist medium, as sphagnum moss, stimulating root formation so that the stem or branch can be removed and grown as an independent plant.

Anchor Root

A large root whose main functin is to hold the plant in place in the soil. (Also called a Primary Root)

Annual

A plant that completes its entire life cycle in a single growing season.

Annual Ring

An annual formation of wood in plants, consisting of two concentric layers, one of springwood and one of summerwood. (Also Called A Growth Ring)

Anther

The pollen-bearing part of a stamen.

Anthracnose

Any of several diseases of plants caused by certain fungi and characterized by dead spots on the leaves, twigs, or fruits.

Apex

The tip of a leaf.

Arbor

A shady resting place in a garden or park, often made of rustic work or latticework on which plants, such as climbing shrubs or vines, are grown. Also pertains to trees. (Also known as a pergola)

Areole

A small, specialized, cushionlike area on a cactus from which hairs, glochids, spines, branches, or flowers may arise.
