DEAD DEAL Smith's Food And Drug Organic/Natural Highlights 3/11/09 Thru 3/17/09

Hello Smith's Shoppers! - View your weekly ad online here!

Here are my best picks for this week.

Meat & Poultry:

Maybe it is just me and my store but this is a new thing for Smith's to carry organic meats. While I do not personally think these are wonderful deals as I can get my meat cheaper via a local rancher, these are not too bad of a deal I think. Even better would be if you have some Winetag coupons for meat or chicken to bring the prices down a bit. The only bad thing about that, at least in my store is that the butcher department does not have a meat counter where you can ask the butcher to package meat in smaller packages so you can use more coupons.

Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts, Private Selection Organic Free Range - $5.99 lb.
Ground Beef, 85% Lean, Private Selection Organic - $5.99 lb.

Dairy:

While I do not personally think that $3.39 for a half gallon of organic milk is a deal (that's $6.78 a gallon!!!) it is on "sale" this week. I can find better deals elseware, and if I can find better deals here in "Small Town" Wyoming, I am sure you can too.

Naturally Preferred Organic Milk, 64 oz., Fat Free, 1%, 2% or Whole - $3.39 ea.

Produce:

I spend a lot of my grocery budget these days on produce for my family and there are some good deals on both organic and conventional produce this week at Smith's.

Organic Produce:

Organic Apples (#94139 Granny Smith, #94021 Gold, #94133 Gala or #94129 Fuji) - $1.99 lb.
Private Selection Cut Vegetables, Conventional or Organic, 10 - 12 oz., Select Varieties - $2.50 ea.
Organic Large Slicing Tomatoes (#93151) - $2.49 lb.
Organic Cucumbers (#94062) - $1.49 ea.
Organic Avocados (#94046) - $1.49 ea.

Conventional Produce:

I have sorted this list of conventionally grown produce by their Dirty Dozen list number.

~Good~
Yellow Onions (#4665) 39˘ lb. (Dirty Dozen List #45)
Ripe Avocados (#4046) 89˘ ea. (Dirty Dozen # 44)
Tender Asparagus (#4080) $1.29 lb. (Dirty Dozen List #39)
Green Cabbage (#4069) 39˘ lb. (Dirty Dozen List #36)
Bunch Broccoli (#4060) $1.29 lb. (Dirty Dozen # 35)

~Neutral~

Roma Tomatoes (#4087) $1.29 lb.(Dirty Dozen # 29)
Mushrooms 8 oz. Whole or Sliced $1.85 ea. (Dirty Dozen # 23)
Large Navel Oranges (#4012) 89˘ lb. (Dirty Dozen # 19)
Cucumbers #4062 89˘ ea. (Dirty Dozen List #16)
Red or Green Bell Peppers (#4065 Green or #4088 Red) 79˘ ea. (Dirty Dozen # 14)
Peeled Mini Carrots 1 lb. Package $1.49 ea. (Dirty Dozen # 13)

~Bad~

10 lb. Bag Russets $2.99 ea. (Dirty Dozen List #12)
Green Seedless Grapes (#4023) 99˘ lb. (Dirty Dozen # 9)
1 lb. Package $2.49 ea. (Dirty Dozen # 6)

What's on MY shopping list?

I have marked my shopping list and have decided to get some of the Organic Apples and conventionally grown cabbage, asparagus, and bell peppers because those are pretty great deals for my neck of the woods this time of year.

I am really excited about the asparagus because to me, that means spring is here (even when there the temps locally hover at freezing here!) and this is the season for it. I may even consider buying enough to freeze for future use. I remember when I was a kid my grandmother grew asparagus in her garden. I would love to do that myself one day when I own my own home as I hear that it takes a while to get the asparagus beds established.

What's on YOUR shopping list?

I just put asparagus in my garden last year. It was fun to watch it grow throughout the summer. It actually grew to look like reeeeeeeeeallllllllllly thin spears, and I let them grow tall and feathery. I hope they'll be ready next year.

You have some great prices on bell peppers. I don't think I've seen prices that low around here. Wow! What a great price on asparagus! I would definitely freeze some at that price!

Potatoes have actually just recently been removed from the dirty dozen list- I updated the post today with the new information. I believe they're number 15, so still not great, but a little better than before.

I agree with you on the organic beef prices- they're a little steep (but then again so is traditional beef these days) so if you can find a good deal and have the space it's a great idea to buy for a few months and stick it in the freezer. I wonder what day they do their markdowns?

That organic milk price seems fairly reasonable for a half gallon of organic milk here in TX. It is pretty common for truly organic milk here to cost $6 plus per gallon.

I am jealous of your wonderful pics! How did you do that? Simple copy/paste feature?

Wow!! I can get a gallon of organic milk in CT for $5.49 which I think is crazy. If I buy raw...it's almost $8 for a glass container (which is really what? a half gallon, and $2 you get back when you return the bottle).
