ATTENTION Get Movin' Goal for this week (4/27/08)

Go for a walk!

It doesn't matter where you do it, or how you do it. Going for a walk will help improve your mood as well as your physical fitness level. It's easy on the joints so people of all shapes and sizes can enjoy a walk regardless of how physically fit they currently are. For this week lets try to aim for something I know everyone can do and get in at least one 30 minute walk. If you're really trying to make healthy changes in your life, try for one 30 minute walk each day this week.

Great idea Kristen! We do between 30 and 60 minutes a day with our dog. It really does improve the mood - I know in the winter, I don't want to go for our walk as much because I don't like being cold, and I am a crabby butt!!!

Having a dog is a great way to force yourself to get in that daily walk!

One thing that I like to do when I'm not in the mood for walking is load up a bunch of NPR podcasts onto my MP3 player. I can listen to my favorite shows while I'm getting my workout and the time really flies by. Sometimes listening to music can get too repetitive and I just need a change of scenery, other times I just want silence and I don't listen to anything at all.

For people who walk on a treadmill indoors, watching a favorite tv show or part of a movie can be a great way to stay motivated. I've also known people who download audio books to their MP3 players and listen to those while they work out.

Do whatever works best to keep you motivated and switch it up if it's not working.

I take a 15 minute walk in the morning and another in the afternoon, with my kindergartener to school. Wanna go for a longer evening family walk, but we have been preoccupied with our vegetable garden.
