FYI Dr Oz's top 5 essentials for a natural medicine cabinet

I happened to catch this segment on the Dr. Oz show the other day and thought it was interesting information. Here's what Dr. Oz suggests as his top 5 essentials for a natural medicine cabinet.

    1. Tea Tree Oil- it works as a natural antiseptic
    2. SLS-free toothpaste- Sodium Laureth Sulfate is added as a sudsing agent and causes mouth sores on many people.
    3. Tiger Balm- works as topical muscle relaxer/pain reliever
    4. Valerian root- works like valium, is a natural relaxer. Is an herb and can interact with other medications that you're on, so you need to be careful with it.
    5. Bentonite Clay- great for stomach ailments and diarrhea

How many do you have in your medicine cabinet? Do you have any other suggestions for natural products that make your medicine cabinet complete?

We have the above. I also recommend the following:

lavender essential oil ~ from a few drops in the bath to relax, to using on dampened (clean) wash cloths for the dryer, to rubbing on temples for easing a stress headache

arsenicum album (homeopathic remedy) for stomach ailments and diarrhea (never tried the bentonite clay) ~ arsenicum works super for us.

I have the tee tree oil...thats about it at this moment.

I don't know about the bentonite clay..it is mined here in parts of Wyoming...they use it in scoopable cat litter. If I am supposed to worry about my cats digesting the stuff I am not sure I would want to be taking it internally for stomach problems.

From the list we have tea tree oil and SLS-free toothpaste.

I agree with purple about the lavender essential oil. I can't use it topically because of sensitive skin, but I do use it as an aromatherapy for migraines.

I really like the tea tree blemish touch stick for bug bites, cuts, scrapes, itches, breakouts, etc- it's seriously like a magic stick!

We also keep around epsom salts which work great in the bath tub to soothe aching muscles and soften your skin. Another good one is witch hazel which is a great natural astringent.

Kristen, you can't even use diluted lavender? That's a bummer ~ I soooo enjoy a nice, soothing soak in a lavender tub! Our son, 9, loves his lavender bath. He's been getting them since he was an itty-bitty baby! Of course, he is at the "shower" age, but he will STILL ask for one if he's had a rough day or just extremely tired.

Yes! Witch Hazel! I like to use that on my face after washing up ~ amazing the "stuff" that still comes off your face with it afterward ~ ugh!

I have SLS-free toothpaste for both myself and my daughter (she's 4, so she doesn't like mint pastes yet)

And I swear I have the bentonite clay as some all natural mask for my face!!!! I'll have to double check!

One thing I have that I think works great if you have ear problems is Mullein Garlic oil....I used that on my daughter some months ago when she was diagnosed with her first ear infection. Worked in mere hours!

I'm sure you're probably right! I used to have my own soap/toiletry business and one of THE most popular things was my bentonite clay mask. Topically okay...internally?? Not so sure about that!

No-- not even diluted! It makes my skin itchy and dry. I really have to be even more of a label hound now and i even avoid shampoos/body wash that have lavender oil as an ingredient. After using them for a few days, they seem to over-dry my skin and make it tight/itchy/flaky.

That reminds me we have Similasan homeopathic earache relief and it also works very well! I haven't heard of the Mullein Garlic oil before.

    Nice list, Ejet!

I'm not sure what Tiger Balm has in it-- I tried looking on their website but they don't seem to have an ingredient list available.

Ground up tigers. LOL Jk. I just ordered some TB liniment from Lucky Vitamin yesterday. I usually use the strongest salve, but I know my brother's horse liniment penetrates great, so I thought I'd try it. I don't like that this has mineral oil, but other than that:

    Active Ingredients
    Oil of Wintergreen 28%
    Menthol 16%

    Inactive:
    Eucalyptus oil
    Spike Lavender oil
    Light Mineral oil

    My Strong TB Ointment says:

    Active:
    Camphor 11%
    Menthol 11%

    Inactive:
    Cajuput Oil
    CassiaOil
    Clove Oil
    Dementholized Mint
    Paraffin Petrolatum

    I personally LOVE Tiger Balm. : )

You don't want my extensive list, but some things in my medicine cabinet:

    Tea Tree Oil
    Lavender Oil
    Oregano Oil
    Rose Absolute Oil
    Olive Oil
    Vitamin C
    Echinacia
    Odorless Garlic
    Ricola cough drops
    Tom's Fluoride Free Toothpaste
    of course Tiger Balm
    Dodder Vine
    Valerian Root (though it STINKS)
    White Willow Bark
and I don't eat my clay, though I could. I wear it, it's the Redmond brand.

And I have a couple homeopathic remedies in there too. Like um, Coffea Cruda, and a couple of the mixed ones for cold and flu that I CANNOT spell. : ) Plus a bunch of other odds and ends, and I have probably 20 essential oils, but those are mostly for cleaning. :)

Okay... just had to chime in! Last night's "Cougar Town" episode had a story line dealing with a nettie pot! I have never seen or used one, but am familiar with the concept - I think I grew up with something that looked more like a white tube attached to a whoopie cushion.

I am so expanding my natural medicine cabinet - right now I have:
    - epsom salt
    - sls-free toothpaste
    - EVOO & EVCO (I swear they do so much for me!)

So, yeah... I have a long way to go!

That sounds painful!!!!~ This is kinda like a little tea pot that you put warm saline in that you put in one nostril and pour through your passages and it come out the other side.. You can see some youtube videos that are sooooo funny!
    What is EVCO?

EVCO is Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. : ) Rachael Rae didn't coin that one though. ; ) I was afraid to "Netti Potty" as my German Oma (gma) calls it. Lol She's a brave woman, she puts a tincture of CAYENNE PEPPER in it. NOT I SAID THE GRANDDAUGHTER! She got one for my Dad and his bad sinus. Dad's a bigger baby than me but he did it.... Though when he was helping me pack up my boxes to ship up to WA when I moved here, he had a HUGE "water leak" about 15 min after he'd done it! Lol We were in the living room taping up moving boxes, and his nose just poured out 1/4 cup of water all down his shirt! LOL I guess that's why they say don't do it less than 20 min before you leave home or lay down. Ha!
Anyway, after I got married, I got one for my husband. He can't smell anything and I think has something permanently stuck in there so I got it for him to try. He actually tried it - after I did. Lol It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought, but I do like the Nasal Wash bottle better. You don't have to tip your head or pour. Just squeeze as you feel comfortable. I buy the saline mix packets bc I know hubby will NEVER use it if he's got to go mix something himself. : )
