FYI Saving with Earthbound Farm Produce at Meijer

This was brought up in another thread, but I thought I'd start a new topic so it doesn't get lost.

A member asked, "What's the best way to save on produce at Meijer?" I don't know if all Meijer stores carry Earthbound Farm Organic items. At my stores, most of the organic produce is Earthbound Farm: lettuce, spinach, carrots, baby carrots, green onions, celery - and maybe some other items I can't remember right now.

Earthbound Farm usually has several coupons floating around. Most seem to be $1/1, or .75/1, or $1/2. Using these can save a great deal on the produce you probably use most often and are at the top of the dirty dozen list: salad mix and carrots. Plus you can save on more!

Meijer often runs the organic salad mix on sale 2/$5. That is already a great sale price, but if you have the $1/1 coupon, you can buy a clamshell container of organic greens for $1.50. Everyday price on baby carrots is $1.99, and using the $1/1 coupon gets you a bag for $.99!

When shopping for organic produce, I prioritize based on two factors: the dirty dozen list, and the items that my family eats most often. If an item doesn't fall into those criteria, I opt for conventional produce unless the organic is cheaper or the price is equivalent.

So let me ask you, does your Meijer carry Earthbound Farm Organic produce? If not, do they carry any specific brands?

Ooh, can you still get the coupon even if you won the bag? I'll have to check. I'm greedy, greedy, greedy.

Our Meijers (Urbana, IL, Champaign, IL) have Earthbound Farm. They run pretty regular sales on them, too. Fairly frequently, I stock up on carrots, $5 for 5, celery, romaine. They've had good sales on O bulk product too: apples, pears, grapes, potatoes, etc. Meijer really makes eating organic affordable for us, and we're on a pretty limited budget.

Another thing about Meijer, they have these orange 40% discount stickers that you should look out for. As long as I plan to use it quickly, I always pick these O items up. I've scored several clamshell greens that way.

The only thing that bothers me is WHERE the produce comes from. I just don't always know. And there's the whole fossil fuel use, etc. So I know it's still better than conventional produce, but it just still bugs me a bit -- I know I'm not doing everything I can. I'm hoping to buy more local this year, but our Farmers Market is VERY popular and the vendors price accordingly.

I also check the packages of the Cascadian Farms frozen veggies and fruit b/c some of them are grown in Mexico and even China (it specifies on the back near the seam), so I try to avoid those and buy the ones grown in the United States.

Also, another way to 'earn' a EarthBound Farm coupon:

Go here: Earthbound Farm Organic | Test Your Knowledge About Organic Farming

Review the information in Organic 101, then take the quiz — if you get all 12 questions right, they send you a coupon good for $1 off any Earthbound Farm product!
(Coupon offer good for US residents only. Limit one coupon per household.)
