Great article!

Der...there is a local home decor/furnishings store just down the road from my apartment that has those coffee cups. At first I didn't realize that it was porcelain and I'm like "Why would anyone buy one of these when you can get them for free!??!"

I figured it out once I read the line "I am not a paper cup." They're actually pretty neat!

Cute cup! Now I want one!

I like what Google does... they encourage their employees to use reusable cups, but they also have recycled paper cups and on-site composting (the cups can be composted). Still keeps the paper out of the landfill, but gives another option besides using gallons of water to wash one cup.

They also have an automatic dishwasher in several of their microkitchens... when it gets full, someone starts it and it washes all of the mugs.

I use reuseable, I know the styrofoam is not going to decompose in the landfill, and the paper cup uses trees and lots of energy, and while yes it takes water to wash the stainless steel or ceramic mug I still have to wash the families dishes every night so what is one more cup? That would be like saying to use paper plates all the time because it takes water to wash your dishes.

While some areas are in a drought (we are here too) and water is in short supply in some areas the fact is that there are better ways to save water than not washing your dishes.

We live in a disposible country...everything is disposable. I am really focusing on creating less trash. I am hoping that by next year we can reduce our trash bill by requesting a 1/2 size city provided dumpster and put out much less trash.

Additionally you could be like my discusting husband who uses his coffee cup for WEEKS without washing it....it makes me gag just thinking about how dirty that cup is in his truck.

DH is that way with two of his most used cups. For his coffee cup travel mug, he requests that we wash it with water only, no soap. Why? Because he insists that he can taste the soap residue in it. Since DD's daily chore is to wash the dishes, she abides by his wishes. When I wash the dishes, I grab his cup and wash it THOROUGHLY with soap and water. Since he has never complained, I will assume that he hasn't caught on yet.

DH's second most used cup is a plastic rinse/gargle mug in the bathroom. Although he rinses it everyday, it is seldom washed and since I don't use a cup to gargle with, I forget about it most days. That is, until it reaches the point that it looks like it is pink/orange inside. Now that is NASTY and you know it is probably crawling with bacteria and germs!!! So, when I see this, I end up boiling it in water with a little bleach. Can we say YUCK! He doesn't seem to care and still says "leave me alone" when I mention this.

Meh, it's perfectly acceptable to not wash a coffee cup with soap, as long as the coffee is black. It really does ruin the taste if you wash with soap. Just scrub it out with baking soda when the stains get to be too much.

DH swears he can taste it if I wash his SS cup with soap, so most times I rinse only.
