Recycle Plastic Recycling Gets Easier

Plastic Recycling Gets Easier

Few communities offer curbside collection of number-5 polypropylene plastics—commonly used for ketchup bottles, yogurt and hummus containers, straws, and Tupperware—because recyclers often don’t accept the stuff.
Solution: Gimme 5, a program launched by Preserve, the leading maker of 100 percent recycled products, along with Stonyfield Organic, Organic Valley Family of Farms, and Whole Foods Markets.
Consumers can drop off washed number-5 plastic at select Whole Foods Markets in the Midwest, Northeast, Northern California, and Florida, or mail them to Preserve. The products will be recycled into toothbrushes and razors. Locations and mailing instructions are here.

That is pretty cool! If I ever move out of CA I will have to remember that. For now, we are able to curbside recycle about everything from newspapers to yard waste to #1 - 7 plastics. I love it!

Glad to see that things are finally getting easier to recycle. We're spoiled here, as we can recycle everything but number 6. I have many mushroom containers that I'm sure will find a good reuse somewhere down the line (drawer organizers?). However, there are many, many small towns around me, that don't have access to whole foods, and don't have any recycling options at all. Breaks my heart.

Speaking of waste, just got back from the hospital with one of my twins (asthma, two nights, she's fine now), and talk about WASTE! Styrofoam city! I smuggled flattened cereal boxes and plastic containers out to my bin at home. But the nasal cannula that I tried on to convince DD that it was nothing to be afraid of is a lost cause of hospital waste.

I'm trying to remember what show it was on, but I actually saw something on television last year that showed how they were turning these products into the toothbrush and razor handles. It was really neat!

(It might have been that "How it's Made" show, but I'm not sure.)
