THUMBS UP Good deal on Skippy Natural after Target printable

My Target has the Skippy Natural for $2.09 - $1/1 Target Printable = $1.09.

Comparatively, the regular Skippy is made with hydrogenated oils, and the natural is made with palm oil. Palm oil has faults too, but it does make an affordable & healthier alternative to hydrogenated oils.

I also want to add that natural skippy has sugar, and not HFCS. This is a good bridge item for someone who wants to eat healthier but can't afford everything organic.

That is a good deal. I have a tip too.

When you first open the jar and stir the oil and pb together, make sure to mix it well. But then when you put it in the refrigerator to store, put it in upside down (until it is gone). You will find that you won't have to keep on stirring it when you open it up the next time. (Do I need to mention to flip it back over before opening it? I hope not)!

Because of the palm oil, you don't have to worry about separation...

I learned this trick when I was working as a nanny and do this with all of my nut butters now! In fact, when I bring them home from the store, I store them upside down to make it a bit easier when it comes time to mix it up.

I have always stored opened peanut butter in my cupboard (and so did my mom). Is it supposed to be refrigerated or is that a personal preference? Just curious. Still learning here.

A little of both... the kind that tends to seperate, it seems to do better in the fridge. It's also less likely to go rancid in the fridge.

My family eats so much peanut butter that I don't think it would ever have a chance of getting rancid.

I've been meaning to post on this thread and continue to get interrupted or sidetracked...what I wanted to say was that you need to watch the "natural" peanut butters because many of them (including Skippy I believe) are made with palm oil. Palm oil is a saturated fat. It can raise your blood cholesterol levels, unlike corn oil, safflower oil and soy oil which are high in polyunsaturated fat and can reduce it. This is semi-controversial and there are conflicting reports, but I try to avoid it because I am one of the ones on the side that it is not good for you. Many Kashi products have palm oil in them as well, which is why I always read their labels carefully, and only eat their organic items.

Granted, they don't have HFCS, but if you can stay away from the palm oil too, then you're that much better off...in my opinion.

Then there's those of us who believe the research that shows that a high sugar and low fat diet is more likely to raise your cholesterol levels than a diet with saturated fats. ;) We use palm oil and coconut oil in our household rather than canola.

But YMMV... different people follow different dietary plans and different ones work for different people.

Thanks for the info though!

You are right, everyone is different and what works for some may not work for others.

As for the coconut oil, I have read that helps with weight loss and maintenance.

And I know the organic peanut butters usually just contain peanuts, and sometimes salt depending on the brand, so that's why I was mentioning the ones that are "all natural".

Thanks for your input!

Yeah, these would be my overall preference to buy... just nuts and salt, no added oils or sugars or anything. Still, even the "natural" stuff is a step up from the hydrogenated HFCS stuff, and I couldn't pass it up at that price!

Now if I can just find a good sale on the good stuff...

I found Maranatha Organic Peanut Butter at BigLots! for $2.50. If you have one nearby, you might want to check them out. :)

Oh, that's right! I remember seeing someone's post (maybe yours?) about that yesterday... I'm hoping to check it out tomorrow.
